OUR PROJECTSOngoing Projects

Ijabo Slam Festival

Ijabo Slam Festival is an annual event aimed at unifying and empowering artists from the Great Lakes region and Africa in general. The festival focuses on promoting integrity and prestige (“Ijabo”) through the art of slam poetry. It seeks to provide a platform for diverse voices, particularly young and emerging poets. The 2024 edition focused on artists from Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC, to express their creativity and address social issues through spoken word.

The festival’s motto is “Imbaraga z’Ijambo,” translated as “The Power of Words.” We aim to inspire positive change and foster a sense of community through the powerful medium of slam poetry.

U SPEAK LIVE

U SPEAK LIVE is a vibrant slam poetry collective based in Kigali, Rwanda, dedicated to celebrating Rwandan culture and fostering artistic expression through the power of spoken word.

Our flagship event, U SPEAK LIVE THURSDAY, hosted in collaboration with L’Espace, provides a creative and inclusive platform that features:

Open Mic Sessions: A showcase for poets in the room to share their work, offering an intimate and inspiring space for spoken word performances.

Guest Performers: Exceptional artists who often bring live musical instruments, adding a unique dimension to the evening.

Co-Writing Sessions: An engaging activity where all attendees collaborate to create a poem. The session concludes with a volunteer from the group reading the co-created piece aloud.

Whether you’re a poet, a lover of the arts, or simply curious, U SPEAK LIVE offers a space to connect, create, and celebrate.

Slameurs Fédérateurs

As part of the Great Lakes region network of artists, in partnership with the Dutch NGO La Benevolencija, UMUT Arts as the legal representative of the U SPEAK LIVE poetry collective  produces monthly content for Slameurs Fédérateurs  program.

Slameurs fédérateurs is a slam project bringing together five-5 slam collectives from three countries in the Great Lakes subregion: Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The objective is to promote peace and peaceful coexistence through poetic performances.

Rwanda Theater Festival

Rwanda Theater Festival which was initiated as “Rwandan Theater First” back in 2018, is an annual Theater event which aims to showcase theater as a strong and useful artistic tool to be valued by empowering young performing artistes to benefit from their talents giving and supporting them with a platform for expression.

RWANDA THEATER FESTIVAL is an interactive event which involves Theater workshops, live Theater performances, spoken word poetry performances and panel discussion about Theater development.

Featured performers: One man shows, small groups and solo performers.

U SPEAK LIVE

U SPEAK LIVE is about expressing what is inside a person; the art of free expression artistically!
An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way, an artist says a hard thing in a simple way. (Charles Bukowski). Everyone is an artist! The problem is: how do we maintain it?
This project is not just about selecting and training the best Poets to entertain people, we give our audience an open space for self-expression. In the “U SPEAK LIVE ” performances we interact with people, we provide an OPEN MIC and give opportunities to our audience members to SPEAK out loud what they want to speak; to RECREATE and reconnect with their being. We also conduct poetry workshops for skills building.
U SPEAK LIVE is an interactive project that connects artists with the audience.

Message from Our  CEO

Art has been a home to me since my childhood. I am glad to share this message with you hoping that you may learn a lesson or two from my experience. Being an artist at the same time being a cultural manager was my long time dream. I grew up in a country where there are no art schools or academic programs for the arts including cultural management.

I was curious to learn about culture and creative industries which exposed me in different platforms and programs. I attended different cultural management programs additional to my graduation from the college of business and economics including artistic workshops to sharpen my skills about the industry. I learnt the importance of self-discipline to being consistent in the work you do and I believe that this accompanied my journey of being a professional artist.

My vision is to see a world that is empowered where everyone is able to do what they love especially for young artists. A cornerstone of this vision is to enable these aspiring artists to not only flourish but also to derive a sustainable livelihood from their creative pursuits. The untapped reservoir of latent talents beyond established horizons remains a lamentable reality, one that my mission seeks to redress.
