UMUT Arts Rwanda is an independent social enterprise based in Kigali, Rwanda, with the mission to educate, entertain, and stimulate Youth to believe in their capabilities using performing Arts and to use the platform as a tool for mental health awareness.

UMUT is a Turkish name which means Hope, relevant to the Rwandan word “UMUTI” which means medicine; we use art as a medicine to get Hope, focusing on mental Health and healing stories.

Message from Our  CEO

Art has been a home to me since my childhood. I am glad to share this message with you, hoping that you may learn a lesson or two from my experience. Being an artist at the same time being a cultural manager was my long-time dream. I grew up in a country where there are no art schools or academic programs for the arts, including cultural management.

I was curious to learn about culture and creative industries, which exposed me to different platforms and programs. I attended different cultural management programs in addition to my graduation from the college of business and economics, including artistic workshops, to sharpen my skills in the industry. I learnt the importance of self-discipline in being consistent in the work you do, and I believe that this accompanied my journey of being a professional artist.

My vision is to see a world that is empowered, where everyone can do what they love, especially for young artists.

A key part of this vision is to help aspiring artists grow and earn a stable income from their creativity. There are many talented individuals whose potential has yet to be discovered, and, unfortunately, their skills remain overlooked. Reality, one that my mission seeks to redress.

Sylvestre NSENGIMANA

CEO: UMUT Arts Rwanda

BACKGROUND

As a creative young soul, Sylvestre NSENGIMANA, after university studies, found it difficult to find a platform for artistic expression in Kigali. He was a member of the artistic group “Les Stars Du Theatre” at the National University of Rwanda. The group was engaged mainly in acting theater, and Sylvestre has been a good performer since then (2016). He joined different artistic initiatives and organizations to understand the cultural and creative management side, which resulted in the child’s dream realization to fulfill his passion for creating a platform that helps young artists express themselves in the performing arts.

The first meeting was held on January 6, 2018. Sylvestre invited five fellow creative friends to pitch the idea, and only three made it, who became the first members of the group. The meeting structured the direction of the idea; what and how to do. UMUT Arts was created in 2018 with the aim of educating, entertaining, and stimulating youth to believe in their capabilities and to empower youth using the Performing Arts. UMUT is a Turkish name which means “Hope”, a rhyme to the Rwandan concept “UMUTI” which means “medicine”. The goal is to find a medicine that gives us Hope.

UMUT Arts is an independent creative enterprise that operates locally and internationally with talented artists, peacemakers, and art lovers from different corners of the world. The head office is located in Gasabo, Kigali, Rwanda.
